As many as 21 million Americans have vision problems and 80 million have potentially blinding eye diseases. Age-related macular degeneration (AMD), cataract, diabetic retinopathy, and glaucoma are the main causes of vision problems and blindness in older Americans. There are some conventional treatments or surgery available for some eye conditions, but some people turn to dietary supplements to prevent them or to delay their progression. Here are 4 things you should know if you are considering taking dietary supplements for eye conditions:

  1. Findings from the Age-Related Eye Disease Studies (AREDS and AREDS2) suggest that taking dietary supplements with antioxidant vitamins and zinc may slow the progression of age-related macular degeneration in people who have intermediate AMD, and those who have late AMD in one eye. Data from other studies do not support using other dietary supplements, such as Ginkgo biloba and omega-3 fatty acids for AMD. Read More

A variety of “detoxification” (“detox”) diets and regimens-also called “cleanses” or “flushes”-have been suggested as a means of removing toxins from your body or losing weight. Be aware that there isn’t any convincing evidence that detox/cleansing programs actually remove toxins from your body or improve your health. Even more important, some detox products or procedures may be harmful to your health. The side effects of some procedures, such as colon cleansing, can be serious.

Detox programs may involve a variety of approaches, such as:

  • Fasting
  • Consuming only juices or other liquids for several days
  • Eating a very restricted selection of foods
  • Using various dietary supplements or other commercial products
  • Cleansing the colon (lower intestinal tract) with enemas, laxatives, or colon hydrotherapy (also called “colonic irrigation” or “colonics”)
  • Combining some of these or other approaches.

Bottom Line

There isn’t any convincing evidence that detox or cleansing programs actually remove toxins from your body or improve your health. Weight loss on a detox diet may be because these diets are often very low in calories.
